Uncovering Gems is a weekly music curation publication founded by Bryan Bradley in 2024. Every Sunday, a new Rough Cuts volume drops. Ten to fifteen hand-picked tracks across R&B, Hip-Hop, Indie, Jazz, and House, each with editorial commentary. Tracks are tagged new, forgotten, or lowkey to surface different listening modes. Everything is editorially curated. Nothing is algorithmic.
The Manifesto
I believe algorithms have gotten better at predicting what you already like, and worse at showing you what you'd love. That's a real problem for anyone who cares about finding new music, because prediction and discovery are opposite jobs. One keeps you comfortable. The other makes you grow.
Streaming made everything available and somehow nothing felt found. Uncovering Gems is a small protest against that: a weekly mix, hand-picked, with the kind of care that used to come from a friend with good taste, a college radio show, or a record store clerk who actually knew you. Slowed-down listening for a sped-up world.
One person. One Sunday. Ten to fifteen tracks. No charts. No data science. Just the songs worth finding.
How It Works
Every Sunday, a new Rough Cuts volume drops on the volumes archive. Each one comes with a Spotify playlist, curator notes on why these songs, and gets added to the growing archive.
If you just want the standout tracks, they live in the tracks feed, filterable by genre and mood. Longer writing about music, artists, and taste shows up in the journal.
The Curator
I’m Bryan Bradley. I started Uncovering Gems in 2024 because I was tired of the same songs on repeat and algorithms serving me stuff I already knew. I think the best music comes from artists early in their cycle, before the algorithm catches on, and my goal every week is to find those songs before you have to hear them somewhere else first.
Every Sunday I sit down and pick the ten-to-fifteen tracks I’ve actually been playing that week: new drops, older records I forgot I loved, songs that popped up on an artist’s radio and stuck.
